Becoming Canada's Birthday Town
With an official proclamation, by-law ordering stores to close and a fantastic schedule of events Aurora kicked off its inaugural Canada’s Birthday Town celebrations. Approximately 15,000 people attended the two-day celebration which was praised in an editorial by the neighbouring Town of Newmarket: "From all accounts Aurora will become truly Canada's Birthday Town. Aurora's Dominion Day celebrations drew the biggest and happiest and most enthusiastic crowds the town has ever seen." - Aurora Banner, July 16 1969. Did you know? July 1st was officially renamed Canada Day on July 9th 1982. Before that it was known as Dominion Day. |
